Gallaudet basketball

Jim Phelan, the long time, and quite legendary
basketball coach at Mt. St. Mary’s College
(NCAA-I), passed away recently.

Did he coached against Gallaudet in a basketball
game?

Yes, in the 1954-55 season Mt. St. Mary’s (at
that time, NCAA-III program) routed Gallaudet.

It was to be the only and the last time he
coached against Gallaudet.

Illinois wrestling

Illinois used to have a stand-alone wrestling team.

A newspaper story, in part said:

Illinois United (the Jacksonville Routt/School for the Visually
Impaired/School for the Deaf co-op team)

note:
in the past the school produced outstanding wrestlers.
One of them was a state champion and an all-American
while wrestling at Gallaudeet.

Deaf Golf

just 14 years old

part of a newspaper story

Jamie Fisher, a member of the Pinehurst Chapter of the American Singles
Golf Association, competed in the United States Deaf Golf Association
Tournament in Austin, Texas, last week at the Falconhead Golf Club. Her
fourth-place finish, at 343, over the four days of play, won her a spot on
the USA Women’s Golf Team at the World Championship to be held at the
Wailua Golf Course in Kauai, Hawaii. That USDGA competition will take
place on October 15-22, 2022.

At the event, she played in a separate “Texas Shootout” match and finished
first. Fellow ASGA member, Butch Lundgren, caddied for Jamie and she
“gives him lots of credit”.

Deaf Golf

another young deaf golfer

from a posting:
“For Women’s Open, Ashlyn Johnson who is only 14 years old showed her
consistency with scores of 79,77, 75, and 74 with the help of her short
game skills.  She won by 30 strokes perhaps the widest margin over 2nd place,
Patty Lopez,”

note:
Patty Lopez, as a young woman, twice qualified for the US Women’s
Open. The late Gil Lentz caddied for her in Open.

……………………..

deaf golfer’s lifetime goal

a deaf golfer, who is not ranked among the nation’s
best deaf golfers, has a continuing goal – to golf
at each of USA’s top golf courses, including the
Masters.

……………………..

wheelchair basketball

The Cincinnati Dragons Wheelchair Basketball Team finished the regular
season with an undefeated 24-0 record and finish the season ranked #1 in
the nation.  The Dragons will head to the NWBA National Tournament on June
25-27 in Wichita as the #1 seed and will play the winner of #16
Baltimore/#17 OKC in the first round on Friday June 25.  The Dragons are
led by captain and starting point guard Kerwin Haake, a deaf senior from
Lexington KY.

note:
he will be playing for the University of Arizona wheelchair basketball
team on a wheelchair basketball scholarship offer.

……………………..

baseball umpire

Maurice Potter was a well known umpire in MN amateur baseball

note:
Potter always stood behind the home plate, never on bases.

He was often asked to umpire big time baseball games in
Minnesota

He turned down offers to become minor league umpire because
he valued home life and his regular day-time job

He passed away some years back

…………………….

elite deaf swimmer

from a brief posting

These 2020 Olympics hopefuls made their start in the Sacramento region
Matthew Klotz not only represents the small town of Shingle Springs, but
also the deaf community.

……………………..

college athlete

from an announcement

Mia White, former standout player and captain of Rochester Institute of
Technology’s women’s soccer team, has accepted an invitation to play in
Europe for the Primera Regional Madrid league’s Sporting Club Madrid team,
a pre-developmental professional academy formerly known as Football
Academy Madrid. White ’20 ’21 (business, MBA) will be the only Deaf player
on the team.

note:
not sure if it is pro soccer; or a “pay to play” high level
women’s soccer in Europe?

…………………….

random deafsports thoughts

very stupid tweet

Has anyone seen the Facebook commercial for deaf basketball players? I’m
just imagining deaf dudes getting absolutely crushed by screens left and
right hahahaha

note:
this tweeter is probably anti-deaf and loves to mock the deaf

our Gallaudet basketball coaches, current and past, constantly
coach their players to smell out screens and to outsmart
these hearing opponents
