Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. The NWAAD hall of fame announcement had a serious
oversight. What was it?

A. Re Brenda Bessner, it did not mention that as a senior
at Washington School for the Deaf she was #1 in the nation
in the javelin (not deaf schools, but ALL hearing high schools)!
This was a big time accomplishment that unfortunately was not
mentioned in the announcement.

ISD Boys Basketball Feb 14th Recap

Boys.  Orioles Seniors get a big W for their last home game! The seniors
took the game back from a pesty team across the town, Shortridge with 8.0
seconds left in the game! And the drought of 76 years of losing streak
against Shortridge also ended! The score was 66-65. Senior Kyle Bingham
had his  brilliant evening with superb shooting all night with 82 % from
the field (14/17 fgs) including 2 treys for 36 points, which is his career
high. Senior Trevor Stonebraker joined him with 12 points including a half
court shot that tied the score at the half time, 38-38. It marked a
turning point for his team. Another senior forward, Raven Taylor who kept
his young teammates in check on defensive end. Freshman Preston Kelly
apparently had Lin-like passes for 7 assists which is his career high. He
also had 8 points and sophomore Zack Kremer had experienced a flu-related
symptom in the game but contributed 8 points. Our record is now 7-12 with
a correction from Medora. s game, which was forfeited due to an
ineligibile player on their team. We are heading into last two games on
the road against Tindley on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and Covenant Christian on
Thursday, 24th. Support them on those days by showing up on their courts!

New Mexico girls

(newspaper story)

The Class B season doesn’t end until Saturday, and as it stands now, the
Lady Roadrunners of New Mexico School for the Deaf are the leaders in
District 1B. That is key because the regular-season champion gets a berth
into the Class B State Tournament at Bernalillo High School. It has been a
good year for the girls program at NMSD, what with the volleyball team
making its first appearance in the state tournament in eight years last
November.

We’ll see what happens over the next two weeks, but suffice it to say,
the Lady Roadrunners deserve kudos for their performance this year on the
court — volleyball and basketball.

by one point. And now, this same school again in

Hoopa Valley, ugh! Six hours bus ride from Fremont.

Gallaudet women’s swimming

GU swamped by Notre Dame Gators, 68-53
January 25, 2012

BALTIMORE – The Gallaudet University women’s swimming team ran
into a very tough Notre Dame of Maryland University squad on the road
Wednesday as the Gators won 68-53 at the LeClerc Pool.

Gallaudet (3-9) won five of the 14 events as freshman Alexandra
Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) had a hand in four of the five
first-place finishes. Polivanchuk won three individual events and
swam the anchor leg of the 160-yard freestyle relay. Her time of
1:01.69 in the 100 butterfly narrowly broke the GU program mark but
it did set a pool record. She placed first in the 200 butterfly
(2:29.18) and 1,000 freestyle (12:11.72). Her teammates on the relay
included junior Brittany Turner (Palmdale, Calif.), sophomore Alyssa
Gleason (Springfield, Va.) and freshman Tandy Lewis (Frederick, Md.)
as the Bison quartet finished in 1:33.22.

Junior Tong Song (Beijing, China) won the 160 IM in 2:09.66 and was
second in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:21.56 and
2:54.94, respectively. Song was also on the second-place 160 medley
relay (1:48.12) along with Gleason, sophomore Valerie Farr (Fremont,
Calif.) and senior Danielle Koplitz (Eau Claire, Wis.).

Gleason had two individual finishes as she helped to earn GU team
points in the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 1:20.78 and
2:53.12, respectively. Farr was second in the 160 IM, behind Song, as
she touched the wall in 2:15.50 while she placed third in the 100 and
200 breaststroke with times of 1:22.40 and 3:05.34, respectively.
Lewis was second in the 100 freestyle (1:12.50) and third in the 40
freestyle (23.55 seconds) and 200 freestyle (2:46.19).

The Gators improved their overall record to 4-3 with the win as Notre
Dame won nine events.

Gallaudet will be off this weekend before the Bison travel to College
of St. Elizabeth on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m. for a North Eastern
Athletic Conference dual meet.

Gallaudet men’s swimming

Brian Bennett breaks Gallaudet school record in 1,000-yard freestyle

BALTIMORE – Senior Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) swam in
two exhibition events Wednesday evening at the LeClerc Pool on the
campus of Notre Dame of Maryland University as the Gallaudet
University women’s swimming team participated in a dual meet
with the host Gators, who won 68-53.

Bennett swam in two exhibition events to try and improve his times to
help his chances of swimming beyond the conference championships. The
senior leader of the Gallaudet men’s swimming team broke his
own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle as he finished in 10
minutes, 14.97 seconds which was nearly four seconds faster then his
time he set back on Feb. 14, 2010.

The second event Bennett swam in was the 200 butterfly. He
didn’t break the school record but his time of 2:12.32 was a
personal best.

Gallaudet men’s swimming

(from a Colorado newspaper)

Brian Bennett, Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind

Bennett is in the midst of his senior season at Gallaudet University, the
nation’s university for the deaf and hard of hearing. He has set four
school records this season (100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle and the
100-yard butterfly). He holds nine program records. The 2010-11 North
Eastern Athletic Conference (Division III) Men’s Swimmer of the Year has
earned three conference swimmer of the week awards so far this season. The
Bison recently won their fifth meet of the year to clinch the first
winning season since 1965 and only the second winning season all-time.

Gallaudet women’s basketball

Gallaudet women’s basketball program featured by espnW in Hoops Across America

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Gallaudet University was recently profiled by
espnW, the new women’s athletics website powered by ESPN, and
was selected as one of 16 women’s basketball programs from all
NCAA divisions to be featured in “Hoops Across America.”
The Bison women’s basketball program rubs elbows will
powerhouse programs such as University of Tennessee, University of
Connecticut, Baylor University, Purdue University and defending
Division I national champion Texas A&M University to name a few of
the other “Sweet 16” teams being profiled. Eight programs
have been profiled thus far and Gallaudet has been the lone Division
III program featured.

The espnW website describes the season long feature as “we
will take a journey across America, bringing you an in-depth look at
16 women’s college basketball programs — our Sweet 16. We’ll begin
the first week of the season and conclude just before the conference
tournaments. We’ll visit powerhouse schools and those off the beaten
path, programs that are emerging and those that were there from the
beginning. At the end of this 16 weeks, we hope you’ll have a true
flavor of Hoops Across America”

This past December, writer Brant James came out to watch
Gallaudet’s home game against North Eastern Athletic Conference
(NEAC) foe Penn St.-Berks, where the Bison were victorious 85-55. His
account of the game and atmosphere can be read in his story titled
“Gallaudet makes its point loud and clear.”

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. Who is Ed Malefyt and what was his claim to fame?

A. Do read an old DeafDigest Sports posting:

Who was the most improbable hero in the rich history of
Eastern Schools for the Deaf boys’ basketball tournaments?
Ed Malefyt, of New Jersey School School for
the Deaf, let go a long set shot to win the 1958 championship
game against Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.
Malefyt, born with one arm, did not see a minute of action
during the tournament until eleven seconds remained in the
overtime, with the score still knotted at 44-44. Because of foul
disqualifications, the New Jersey coach ran short of subs and had
to insert the rarely-used Malefyt into the game.
The cocky Western Pennsylvania boys, upon seeing Malefyt get
set for the final shot from the 40-foot range, did not guard him
closely. They felt he would misfire and the game would go into
the second overtime.
The shot went in at the buzzer, handing his school the
surprise championship!
One crestfallen Western Pennsylvania player said his loafing
on defense was a painful lifetime lesson.

named NEAC Men’s Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week after a
dominant performance Saturday at the Field House pool.

Everton-Lovell won three individual events and a relay to help the
Bison (4-2-1, 2-0 NEAC) defeat NEAC rival Wells College (2-3, 1-1
NEAC), 155-117. The sophomore took first place in the 200-yard
butterfly (2:28.36), the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.52), and the
400-yard individual medley (5:03.45). He was also a part of the
winning 200-yard medley relay team along with seniors Brian Bennett
(Colorado Springs, Colo.), James McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.), and Sean
Ryant (Cleveland, Ohio). That group narrowly missed a Gallaudet
program record of 1:49.52 with a time of 1:49.88.

Everton-Lovell received this honor once last year as well, being
selected for the week of Nov. 15, 2010. Bennett, last season’s
NEAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year, has won three NEAC Men’s
Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week honors this season.

Gallaudet will step out of conference this week and will be tested in
York, Pa., against former Capital Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.)
College and Penn St.-Altoona on Friday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. This is the
last meet of the semester for the Bison.

NCSD boys basketball team claims 1st home win since ’07

The North Carolina School for the Deaf boys basketball team overcame foul
trouble to get payback versus its biggest rival in a home victory last
week.

Carolina School for the Deaf with a 48-42 win, the Bears. first home
victory since 2007 and first defeat of the Hornets at home since 2005.

The Bears climbed out on top comfortably early, but a ENCSD 3-pointer just
before halftime made a game of it once more. NCSD starter Cody Hollar then
fouled out with seven minutes to play, but the Bears hung on to win by
six.

In the girls contest, Yasmin Swinney scored all of the Lady Bears. points

newspaper story

Freshman walk-on Luke Adams entered the contest with a little more than
11 minutes left and Tech trailing 54-40. It was his first action of the
season.

Adams made the most of it.

The 5-foot-7 guard, who was born deaf and uses cochlear implants in his
ears to aid his hearing, registered three points, three assists and a
steal in eight minutes, but his biggest contribution came on defense.
Adams drew a charge and appeared to key an elevation in defensive
intensity for Tech down the stretch.

Attention: athletic directors & basketball coaches

DeafDigest Sports exists to serve all of you.

You are expected to turn in the game scores on a regular
basis throughout the season.

Schools that do not regularly turn in the scores will NOT
be invited to nominate their best players for Deaf All
American honors.

It is not fair to schools that faithfully turn in their scores
when other schools don’t!

If you are seeing this phrase “newspaper story” it means the
school did not turn in the score!

Thank you.

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. What is the future of Deaflympics?

A. At this point, uncertain. There is always hope that we will
have Summer Deaflympics and Winter Deaflympics rotating on a
regular basis. The future of World Deaf Championships in some sports
however is much brighter.

New Mexico School for the Deaf Roadrunners

Head coach: Robert Haney Jr. (fourth season)

Last season: 13-11, 4-4 District 2A.

Returning letter winners: Andrick Carroll, 5-foot-9, junior; Tyrel
Wilding, 5-11, junior; Julio Ruiz, 5-9, junior; Immanuel Neubauer, 5-9,
junior; Zachery Lee, 6-0, junior.

Key newcomers: Kendrick Skeet, 5-foot-5, sophomore; Jesus Medrano, 5-7,
junior; Silvano Frank, 5-8, junior; Fernando Silva, 5-10, sophomore.

Outlook: Graduation and injuries have the Roadrunners looking to regroup
and rebuild. NMSD returns five lettermen, yet this year’s roster features
no seniors.

But count four-year starter Julio Ruiz, a 5-foot-9 junior, as NMSD’s
figurative senior.

“Ruiz brings leadership and experience to the team,” Haney Jr. said in an
email.

Zachery Lee and Tyrel Wilding likely will pick up the majority of scoring
and rebounding for the Roadrunners as they look to take advantage of their
speed and rebounding. Meanwhile, Kendrick Skeets will be the team’s
3-point threat.

“The key words for this year will be ‘defense’ and ‘speed,’ ” Haney said.
“[We] will look to throttle opposing teams’ offenses.”

New Mexico School for the Deaf Lady Roadrunners

Head coach: Letty Perez (ninth season).

 Last season: 12-13, 3-3 District 1B

Returning letterwinners: Caldonia Wilding, 5-foot-9, senior; Rosina
Garcia, 5-6, junior; Amberley Luna, 5-5, sophomore; Kimberly Herrera, 5-4,
sophomore

 Key newcomers: None

Outlook: The NMSD starting lineup is loaded with experience, but beyond
that it’s anyone’s guess.

Wilding is the lone senior for the Lady Roadrunners and leads a group of
three other starters that notched considerable minutes last year. The
fifth starting position is still up in the air because of injuries and the
bench is untested.

”Our starters know the system from last year, so I am expecting good
things from them this year in terms of playmaking, offense and defense,”
Perez said in an email.

Perez added that it will also be the starters’ roles to test and teach
the up-and-coming players the fundamentals and speed of the game. That
experience might help the Lady Roadrunners ascend over the .500 1B mark
they reached a year ago.
