SCSDB Region Track Completed – One Athlete Makes it to Upperstate
The track HORNETS were flying fast yesterday. SCSDB track members ran
several of their BEST times all year.
Douglas Holmes cut 4 seconds off his county 110 hurdles time and came
in 3rd and Qualified to go to UPPER STATE meet In 20.18. He later
helped boys 1600 relay drop their time under 5:00 minutes for first
time this year with his team mates Devantes Heywood, David Peck, and
Gerri Morton.
Raekwon Alston recorded his best times in 100 (18.4) and 200 (39.4).
With 2 boys absent from the relay, he brought the 400 relay home with
fellow teammates Elijah Griffin, Fernandez Johnson, and Devante
Heywood in 54.5.
Alex Duncan ran his best 800(3:44).
Elijah Griffin came in 5 in 100 meter in 11.6 and just missed making
Upperstate.
The ladies put on their own show as well, especially in the 100 where
all 3 ladies ran their best times.
Katie Roche (17.0), Cheylin Jones (18.4), and Alexis Blandshaw
(19.88).
Victoria Trussell had the crowd clapping with strong finishes as she
pulled Coach Neff, her sighted guide, down the track, in both the 400
and 800.
Special thanks to meet director Kim Speer, Joni Canter meet
scorekeeper, SCSDB coaches maintained the grounds, residential staff
and all support over last 2 track days. SCSDB will host Upperstate on
May 4, with Douglas giving his best to make SCSDB proud.

St Marys’ girls track
Yesterday the Lady Bison’s hosted their first official meet against
Cardinal O’hara. With the weather this season being less than ideal,
it has forced our team to spend the better part of our practices
indoors trying challenge each other as well as simulate events.
Needless to say, we were excited to finally get out on the track and
match-up against another school. Coming off an ESDAA championship
last season, we have some newcomers on the team that were looking to
“fill the large shoes” left behind by our graduates. Although the
competition ended without our desired result (20-64), our fresh faced
rookies really showcased their ability and not only impressed the
coaches but proved they were up to the task. Jasmine Hollingsworth
placed 2nd in shot-put and 1st in discus, Tracy White hit a personal
record in the long jump, and Jamilia Torres sacrificed her body by
diving over the finish line in the 100m dash to capture 3rd place.
The coaching staff couldn’t have asked for a better effort by our
Lady Bison’s. Thank you for all those who came out to show your
support.
INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
· Dinahliz Quinones: 3rd in shot put, 3rd in discus
· Andrea Lewis: 1st in 800m, 2nd in triple jump, 3rd in 200m
· Jamilia Torres: 3rd in 100m

SCSDB Track Team Works Hard At The First Two Meets
Woodruff Meet last Week
This was SCSDB’s first meet for 11 rookie runners and 2 first year
coaches. We all learned so much. The talk of the meet was how well
Victoria Trussel (Robertson) ran 800meter with Coach Neff and smiled
the entire way. Then Raekwon Alston ran the 400 under 2:00 using his
blade and never walked: he got a standing ovation from athletes and
fans of all schools. The field events stopped their field events to
see him finish.
Derrick Good improved his best shot put toss by 3 feet. Jada Good and
Lyric Bratcher had their best throws in shot and discus. Fernandez
Johnson improved his triple jump over 2 feet. SCSDB track team may be
young, but we are improving daily.
Christ Church Meet last Night
Bottom line: COLD>>COLDER>>COLDEST night of track season. As Victoria
Trussell asked. “Coach, did the water I spilt on my sweats turned to
ice yet!!!” She had just run her best time in the 800 finishing to 8
teams cheering her to the finish line. YOU HAD TO BE THERE. Other
highlights: Derrick Good threw well over 30 feet in shot. Lyric
improved 8 feet in discus, Fernandez Johnson held his own in triple
jump beating half the guys.
Elijah Griffin beat 4 boys in high jump, Devantes Heywood beat 3 long
jumpers and Katie Roche ran 200 in her best ever 39.68. Douglas
Holmes ran 1:10 in 400, his best ever in 2 years. Next meet is March
20th at SCSDB.

South Carolina football
Subject: Football Team Ends Season with 30 Offensive Points
Game recap:
In the last game of the year, Hornets’ charge falls short in 58-30
loss to Ft Inn Falcons
This was a game where we wanted to build up from the win last week to
let everyone play and get out on the field. This was accomplished as
we emptied the bench several times to let the young players get some
experience. The defense struggled in the game with the Falcons’
multi-directional offense with reverses and pre-snap motions. This
was our achilles heel. The Hornets continued to chip away at the
Falcons lead on offense with a very good game from Montravious James,
who was inserted in to play QB just before halftime. In just a little
over 2 quarters of play, Montravious dazzled the team with 2 rushing
touchdowns (60 yards and 50 yards), a pass for touchdown thrown to
Raheem Jenkins for 55 yards, and a kickoff return touchdown for 60
yards. Altogether he scored 4 touchdowns in one half! No doubt he
came to play.
On defense, they played hard and I’d like to mention Raheem Jenkins
and Fernandez Johnson for their solid tackling. On one play, the
Falcons attempted a double reverse but RJ was not fooled. He
darted back towards the ball and landed a nice hit on the runner’s
legs to end the play. Well done! Fernandez Johnson also did well
trying to read the offense and predict where they would run. He is
becoming a smart player. I’d like to thank the team for giving effort
and listening to coaches. Our defense would not be as good if it
weren’t for the big boys in the middle of defensive line. David
Martynyuk, TreShaun Smith, Hermani Mesilien – good job on the dirty
work and clogging up the middle to stuff the run. Hats off to Kia
Smith for notching a few tackles last night by pulling their players
to the ground. This experience is invaluable for her.
Even with this year’s record, we think the team gained some
fundamentals and got to taste what victory felt like for Homecoming.
It was the highlight of the season. Hopefully that will drive them to
get stronger and faster for more of those wins next year
Game stats:
Yardage (rushing)
TreShaun Smith – 1 yard
David Martynyuk – 1 yard
Christopher McLeod – 20 yards
Rhonte Levine – 32 yards
Elijah Griffin – 14 yards
Montravious James – 139 yards rushing (2 TD’s). On 7 carries, he
averaged a whopping 19 yards per carry.
65 yard kickoff return for TD
Yardage (passing)
Montravious James – 50 yard touchdown pass to Raheem Jenkins
30 yard pass to Fernandez Johnson
……..
St Mary’s soccer
Having won our two previous games in a row, the Bisons had a lot at
stake for their final game of the season by setting themselves up for
their first potential win streak in a few years. Our team was able to
control the GOW school for the majority of the contest. We out shot
our opponent 13-4. Both Lu Reh and Dustin Robinson had their
opportunities with a few break-a-ways but unfortunately we had a
number of attempts that either hit the cross bar, the posts, or just
went a shade wide. Baylen Oliver proved to be up to the task once
again by making a number of key saves in goal throughout the game.
Unfortunately we had one defensive breakdown that led to a GOW goal
and that was the final outcome, 1-0. It should be noted that at the
start of our season if we had lost a game 1-0 our players would have
been satisfied that we at least made the game competitive. Now after
a few wins under our belt our players are no longer content with just
a “good game”. That is exactly that attitude that we have strived to
achieve this season and hopefully they can bring that mentality into
their next sports season. Please wish the team congrats on what we
would consider a large step in the right direction and congrats to
our Seniors (Jacob Rhoades and Peter Miazga) on the final soccer game
of their high school sports career.

Football Team Wins first Game since October 20, 2010
Defeated North Carolinas Schools for the Deaf
Hornets notch their first win 28-6!
Stats and game tidbits:
In a newly featured “turtle” play, TreShaun Smith started the first
play of the game with a direct handoff getting 5 hard earned yards in
the process. It was a beauty seeing him bowl over would-be tacklers.
Tre’ set the tone of the game and sent a message that the Hornets
were ready to play.
Elijah Griffin – 167 yds on 9 rushes. He ended up with 3 touchdowns
and averaged 18 yards per rush. His speed was on clear display with a
long run of 60 yards to put the game safely in favor of the Hornets.
Nice running from him! He would have beaten Forrest Gump.
Christopher McLeod added 36 yds rushing in a supporting role. He also
successfully threw a pass to Montravious James for 15 yards. Chris
managed the game well and was having fun out there.
Fernandez Johnson later came in game to take over QB position. It’s
nice to have a backup that can come in and play with no drop-off.
Fern continued our solid rushing with a scamper down the middle to
left sideline for a 43 yard touchdown! The entire Hornet sideline was
in a pandemonium.
Montravious James added about 18 yards rushing to keep advancing the
ball. The running backs did a solid job to keep the chains moving
with a fresh set of downs.
Everyone on the team got in the game and was able to play. Kudos to
the ENTIRE defense for holding NCSD/ENCSD to only 6 points. The
players were swarming to the ball like someone kicked a beehive. Our
defensive line spread out well and kept their ground game sputtering.
David M, TreShaun S, Montravious J, Hermani M, Kia S, Matthew C all
did fabulous here. Big shout out for RJ Jenkins and Elijah G for
manning the edge and shutting down their passing game. RJ batted down
at least 3 or 4 passes preventing them from getting caught. He
listened to the coaches and played smart football.
Devante H and Douglas H both ran hard and did good special teams
work. They performed their roles well and helped the team keep
players resting on sideline. High five to them!
All in all – a true team victory. They had some adversity in the game
and did not let that affect their momentum. You could see them gel
together and ride the game down to final seconds. Proud of them!
Final score
SCSDB 28
NCSD/ENCSD 6
We would like to thank all the fans, alumni, and family for coming
out to support us. It was a great day. We appreciate all those that
were involved in making the weekend a success – organizers,
concessions, announcers, interpreters, etc. Thank you again for all
you do.
Next game (away) on Wednesday against Ft Inn @ 4 pm. Last game of the
season. Go Hornets!

Dragons Throttle Seacoast 19-0 in a pre-season game
FSDB Dragons took on Seacoast Christian Academy at
Adolph Wurn Park in Jacksonville and emerged victorious 19-0. In
the pre season game, our defense proved to be too much for
Seacoast to handle. Seacoast was able to move into scoring position
several times but we picked them off three times in the red zone.
Chaz Elliott, Tyler Ames, and Corey Koski had interceptions.
Our offense was able to move the ball but could only get in the end
zone three times- twice on a Corey Koski touchdown pass and another
on a Koski keeper around the right side.
We had 6 offensive possessions and scored on 3 of them. We punted
only once and were stopped on downs one other time. A drive ended on
a lost fumble once. Overall we were able to gain a total of 293 yards
We will host Oak Hall Eagles in our season opener at Usina Field
Thursday 8/30 at 7pm.

OG 64 versus MSD 22
It was almost close as soon as we scored 14 points when while trailing 35
points in 3rd quarter. That was the closest one we have had during the game.
Soph. Connor Crichton carried 11 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns
while a 6’2 245lbs Jr. Keegan Linton dove in for extra two points twice.
Sr. Mohammad Algohaim took a snap and threw a long pass to Soph. Jamar Mitchell
for 41 yards touchdown catch. He only completed 2 out of 3 for 48 yards. Mohammad
carried nine times for 25 yards while Soph. Asante Matten took other handoffs.
He carried 16 for 38 yards.
As for defense, most of the boys played on offense and continued to struggle
making some big plays on defense and lack of conditioning.
After the game, I told these boys that the physical conditioning is a very
important part of the football game and that’s why we always do the physical condition
in practices. These guys have some success in this game but we still have a

run along the sideline in first quarter. Before the halftime, PDSD’s
tall freshman quarterback Jesus Espinoza entered his first high
school game and connected on a 35 yard pass to Darrien Aguirre for a
touchdown on his first play. The halftime score was 42-12. In third,
PDSD’s third year quarterback Aguirre hit Johnathan Garcia on a 15
yard slant pass and he sped 20 yards to the end zone for PDSD’s
third touchdown. In the fourth, Mesa converted PDSD’s turnovers on
two fumbles in its territory and a pass interception for 20 quick

Dedication
DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to Race Fred Drake, Sr,
class of 1938, who departed us.
He joined the 1933 Gallaudet football team as a rookie quarterback.
Coach Frederick Hughes rarely used him in the season’s first few
games. Then before the game with American University, needing a spark,
Hughes tabbed a very surprised Drake as the starting quarterback.
All he did was to run wild all over the field and the American tacklers
couldn’t stop him – and Gallaudet won 35-0. It was Gallaudet’s first
win in three seasons and it ignited a wild, all-night campus
celebration.
Race played Gallaudet football throughout student days but his
35-0 feat could not be duplicated. Wary of his open field running,
opponents zeroed on him in each game. He stayed with the team to
the bitter end, as Gallaudet dropped football after he finished his
career in 1937.
Thank you, Race, for giving your best football efforts throughout
Gallaudet’s darkest football moments.

ASDB Girls – 1st Half Summary
The ASDB girls team started the season 0-3 but quickly overcame it
with a current 7-4 record. We also captured the NM Roadrunner
Classic title for the 6th time in 9 or 10 years. Junior Juliana
Apfel and Sophomore Sabina Shysh led the way with 1st team honors.
We also captured the Sportsmanship award, which was neat to see. We
still need work on ball movement and defense against stronger teams,
but we see improvement in the girls each day in practice and games.
Tomorrow night is our game against ASDB Alumni. Former students such
as Rantz Teeters, Wenzel Teeters, Kekoa Murashige, Ida Dotson,
Jillian Apfel, and Lani Murashige will make appearances. The
coaches, Laura Edwards and Jocelyn Paris, will coach the high school
team and possibly do cameo roles in the game as well. The girls’
game begins at 5 pm and the boys’ game will follow thereafter. All
proceeds will benefit the ASDB Athletic Department. Bring it! We
want to see you in blue and white and do hand waves in our building!

Lexington 29 Child School-Legacy HS 42
Roosevelt Island, N.Y.- Lexington Blue Jays had only five players
playing since the key player Jessica De la Cruz was sick and could
not play. We were unable to play offense in the 1st half. Finally,
the girls’ learned to play without Jessica’s talent and clicked on.
We had a 4th quarter surge of 17 points to come back. It was too late
to win the game but I was proud of the girls’ to pick up the pace at
the end.

New York State
(newspaper story)
NYSSD once again will not have boys and girls basketball teams
The New York State School for the Deaf will once again not have boys and
girls basketball teams this season, according to athletic director Dennis
Ryan.
Ryan, who has served as the head coach for the boys basketball team in
the past, said he had “only had a couple boys sign up,” so they were
unable to fill a varsity roster. Ryan said that the boys who did sign up
will compete in the teen league at the Rome Family YMCA.
Ryan said that the girls who signed up will participate with some of
their local students on a combined team in the North County Athletic
Conference-a local league.
NYSSD also did not field boys and girls basketball teams last season.
During the 2009-10 season, the NYSSD boys team reached the NCAC
championship game, losing to New Life Christian School.
(editor’s note: do not confuse it with New York School for the Deaf;
these are two separate schools)

out on top by the score of 28 to 19. Their aggressive defense was
just a little too much for our players to handle.
Despite the loss, there were some positives we the coaches saw
from the girls. For one, Freshman Brianna Bruce was our leading
scorer with a career high of 8 points along with grabbing 5 rebounds.
Senior Jessica Ginyard contributed with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3
steals, and 4 blocks. Another Senior, Morgan Bowens had a busy night
with 2 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals.Sacha Ramos ( Jr. ) chipped
in with 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist while playing on a sore
knee the entire game. Our third Senior on the team, Francine Tyson
knocked down a career best of 4 rebounds. The Lady Panthers will try
and notch their first win of the season when they take on The Lady
Tornados of New York School for the Deaf on December 6.
PSD Boys
In the Boys’ basketball season opener, the fast and furious
Panthers visited the New Jersey School for the Deaf on November 29,
where they stampeded the Colts, 74-41.
Three Panthers reached double figures -Junior Mark Gonzalez led the
squad with 26 points as he shot 87 percent from the field. Senior
Kelly Sanders poured in 16 points along with 7 rebounds, 7 assists,
and 9 steals. Junior point guard Tajji Brown chipped in 15 points and
dished out 5 assists. The young and reserved players saw plenty of
action off the bench.
The Panthers were victorious because statisically they had a
total of 26 steals, shot 69 percent from the field, and committed
just only 8 turnovers! NJSD was without one of ther star players so
perhaps the next game will be a different story.
Our next game is December 6 versus NYSD on our floor!
