(newspaper story)

Athlete . ISDB . Taylor Shultz

Taylor is a senior at the Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind. She has attended ISDB since she was 12 years old. Taylor has participated in a variety of sports for ISDB throughout high school, and has become an athletic leader. She also competed with the high school volleyball and basketball teams as an eighth grader under special permission from IHSAA, due to the small numbers of female students able to play at ISDB.

Taylor has been both a team member and leader on the volleyball and basketball teams at ISDB. Over these years, Taylor has consistently worked hard on her fundamental skills in each of these sports. Taylor was awarded the Most Valuable Player for Volleyball in 2011 and 2012. This is her fifth year playing on the team.

This also is her fifth year on the basketball team, playing mostly in the position of point guard during the past three years. Her experiences in sports have contributed to learning and demonstrating leadership skills. Practicing and building skills on the court, along with developing the teamwork within the group have both been strong parts of developing positive character traits and life skills for Taylor.s future.

Fremont football

(newspaper story)

California School for the Deaf 17, Tomales 14

The host Eagles took a 17-8 lead early in the third quarter and held on to
hand Tomales its first North Central II loss of the season.

Tomales (4-2, 2-1) took the lead initially on a touchdown run by Cody
Titus. But a field goal by Connor Baer and an 85-yard touchdown run by
Brian Freeman helped gave California School for the Deaf (5-1, 3-1) an
10-8 lead. Freeman broke the CSD career rushing record in the game.

A 25-yard touchdown run by Jacy Dike-Pedersen helped give the Eagles a
17-8 lead, and they held that advantage until the fourth quarter when
Titus scored a touchdown on a short catch.

Tomales had two more possessions, but lost the ball on downs both times.

(from very happy athletic director, Kevin Kovacs)

Tomales scored first on a touchdown run by Cody Titus in the 1st
quarter. We answered with a field goal by Connor Baer to make it 8-3.

Brian Freeman, who else, scored on a 85 yard touchdown run after a
Carlos Lopez interception in the end zone to bring us to a 10-8 lead.

Jacy Dike Pedersen then scored on a 25 yard run early in the 3rd
quarter to give us a 17-8 lead.

The score remained 17-8 until the 4th quarter where Cody Titus scored
again on a short catch to bring it to 17-14 after a missed field goal
by Tomales followed by a fumble by the Eagles with 2 minutes left.

Tomales then successfully recovered an onside kick. Our defense had
to battle it out and force them to lose the ball on downs.

Tomales then used up their final 3 time outs to preserve the clock
when we had possession of the ball and failed to get a first down and
they got the ball back with 1 minute left.

Our defense prevailed as they again lost the ball on downs and we
kneeled the ball to run out of the clock and Tomales.

Great great hard battle by both teams….

Brian Freeman broke the career rushing record tonight and is bound to
break so many more career and season records here at CSD this season
with 4 more games left. This man keeps on getting free!!

Tomales, ha, they are a GREAT team and boy our team was so happy to
beat them. Never have we beat them before.. they beat us in the 2002
NCS Class B Championship game.

Roadrunners crush Hondo Valley 62-12

Ty Wilding went buck wild in New Mexico School for the Deaf.s 62-12
District 1 thrashing of Hondo Valley in six-man football on Friday.

Quarterback Julio Ruiz hooked up with Wilding on four of his six
touchdowns, as the Roadrunners mercy-ruled another opponent. The
Roadrunners (5-1) have still only played a single complete game, a 56-12
loss to Lake Arthur last week. NMSD is averaging a whopping 58.2 points in
its five wins.

Wilding, who also rushed for a touchdown and recovered a fumble in the end
zone, hauled in a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to stake the
Roadrunners to a 12-0 lead. Hondo scored a TD to trim it to 12-6 heading
into the second quarter, before NMSD exploded for three touchdowns,
including Wilding.s third, for a 34-12 halftime lead.

The Roadrunners. defense pitched a shutout in the second half, and the
offense continued to pile up yards. NMSD finished with 457 yards of
offense, while holding Hondo to fewer than 200 yards.

Ruiz completed seven passes for 104 yards and 4 TDs. Wilding.s five
catches covered 64 yards. Running back Immanuel Neubauer rushed for 164
yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

(comments from coaching staff)

Our boys played well overall game especially in 2nd half.  The
coaches felt that they played their best game of the season with
62-12 victory over Hondo Valley within our district game.  The game
ended in 2:29 left in 4th quarter due to mercy rule.   Our record is
now 5-1 for the season with Vaughn game coming next Thursday Oct 11th
at 4 pm.

NMSD Offense Stats:
Rushing: 28 rush for 295 yards and 4 TDs
Passing:  11-18 for 162 yards and 4 TDs
NMSD total Offense:  457 yards

Ty Wilding is our Player of the game.  He recorded 6 TDs, 4 in
receiving, 1 in rushing, and 1 in defensive fumble recovery for TD in
end zone.  Also was a force in defense with 4 total tackles and an
INT.

Neubauer led team with rushing offense of 11 carries for 164 yards
and 2 TDs.
Ruiz with 6 for 31 yards
Wilding  2 for 37 yards and a TD
Mendoza  7 for 43 yards and a TD
Chavez  2 for 9 yards,  Lee  2 for 5 yards

Passing Offense:
11-18 for 162 yards and 4 TD passes

Ruiz  7-14 for 104 yds and 4 TDs
Wilding  4-4 for 58 yards

Receiving:
Wilding led team with 5 catches for 64 yards and 4 TD catches
Lee 5 catches for 65 yards,  Ruiz  3 catches for 29 yards

Defense Stats:
Coach Rob wanted to grant Kendrick Skeets as Defense Player of the
Game.   He recorded three total tackles, but he was big part of
stopping Hondo’s traditionally strong spread offense.

Neubauer led team in defense stats with 10 total tackles

Ruiz with 7 total tackles,  Lee with 3 total tackles and an INT,
Wilding with 4 tackles, Chavez with 3 tackles and a sack with 11 yard

I couldnít have asked for anything more from the girls tonight
(except for a win!).  They played well both on offense and on
defense.  They bonded as a team, had good team spirit, and didn’t
give up even when the other team had game point and they were behind.
All three of these games were great, even though the score of the
last one doesn’t look like it.  They were hard fought points with
lots of hits and tipped balls.  I think we have finally found a
rotation that works and the girls have found their groove!  Keep up
the good work ladies!

The next game is on Thursday, September 27 at St. Francis in
Gainesville.  JV will play at 5:30 and Varsity at 6:30.  Please come
out and support the girls, if you can!  (This is our last trek to

TLC Lady Ghosts had a good test against a talented team of Concord

In first match – CA ran over the Lady Ghosts and surely gave us a

In second match – Lady Ghosts started to fire up and fought tooth and

In third Game – we kept battling against CA and their serving was
really good.  By the end of the match we ran out of energy.

Score Results: 6-25, 21-25, 15-25 – CA winning all three matches.

I am proud of this team as they battled against a great team in two
of the three sets.  It was a good wake up call for us and we will

Galloping Ghosts played against a really good team in Newman School.
They scored 5 goals against in 1st half. I had decided to gamble by
putting my three best players on the front line in order to bring
pressure onto them. Also, we make a little change on defense by
putting my best player in defense who can control the game. In 2nd
half we managed better defensively by allowing 2 goal. We will
continue to re-evaluate and move players into differnet positions
until everyone is comfortable with their variety roles in this team.

Lexington School for the Deaf.

Volleyball
For the first time, ALL 6 girls stepped on the court together.
Despite not having practiced together, they showed amazing team work.
Briona Hayes played in her FIRST varsity game. Estefany Martinez and
Deidre Perez improved their serving during each set. Tyaisha Hollis
had a HUGE hit during the third set. Selena Ramos and Kim Nguyen
showed all around skill and handled the demands of each position with
ease. They put in a great effort but couldn’t land a win. The St.
Mary’s girls were great hosts and the sense of camaraderie was easily
seen on and off the court. Overall, it was a great trip and a good
beginning for our girls.

The record currently stands at 0-1

Our first home game is September 28 vs The Learning Center.

……

Rhode Island soccer
We had 18 sign up but were only to field 11 players with 3 ineligible
to play for different reasons. The start of the season was a
challenge playing and practicing with 8 players. The Head coach Jesse
Walsh has been doing a nice job keeping the team together until the 3
ineligible players join the team!

9/18 vs ASD Lost 5-8 (Played 8 on 8)

9/22 @ Block Island lost 0-9 (With 7 players)

9/25 @ Masters Lost 6-8 (Played with 8 players)

Game 6 Write-up

This was a great game against WPSD (Western Pennsylvania
School for the Deaf), but where we should have succeeded, we didn’t.
This was a game that we could have, and should have, won, but, we,
as a team, could not click.  We made many shots, but we were not able
to get any through, as many shots hit the crossbar.  Three shots, to
be specific, hit the crossbar, however, two actual shots were made
and saved by the WPSD goalie.  We were not able to make any shots
click, however, neither were they, as they only had three shots on
our goalie.  The game ended with a score of 0-0, a game that we
should have won, but we, as a team, were not able to click, so we
ended the game in a tie.

Score: 0-0
Record: 1-2-3

Game 7 Write-up:  The game against WPSD (Western Pennsylvania School
for the Deaf) was hard because we just could not click, missing some
of our key players, but the game against OSD (Ohio School for the
Deaf), however, was a breeze because we were able to click
beautifully.  We got our first goal within the first five minutes of
the first half, then we just kept the goals coming in, with some
beautiful shots from Paul, the star of this game.  This game was a
validation of our skills, and we just knew what to do and how to beat
OSD.  We were able to get six goals, but in the last ten minutes of
the second half, we seemed to slack a bit, that’s not to say that we
let them score, because we didn’t, but our energy seemed to drain,
and we just didn’t score any more.

Score 6-0
Record: 2-2-3

Game 8 Write-up:  It was time for a rematch against WPSD, after that
0-0 tie which we knew we should have won.  Our morale was high after
our defeat of OSD yesterday, and we knew that we should, and would
beat WPSD.  After a beautiful pass from Tim Artinian, Chris Mitchell
made the first gaol of the game (His first career goal for RSD as
well), and the first goal for us, all in under five minutes!  Then
the goals started coming more easily, and Tim made two more goals for
us.  Yes, we won the game 3-1, after they made their first goal, but
that stopped us from having a shut out.  We still won the rematch
against WPSD, and we were now 2-0-1 in the tournament.

Score: 3-1
Record 3-2-3
Game 9 Write-up:  Another match against OSD?!  We were prepared
again, and our confidence was high after beating WPSD, and we had
some swagger in our step, not too much though.  We knew that we had
to beat them, but what we didn’t know was that we were already the
homecoming champions, and that if we beat them, it would just
solidify our title.  We got our first goal at exactly four minutes,
and Jaron Rehkop, who got another goal later in the game.  Our
homecoming MVP, Tim Artinian, got another two goals, and brought his
total goal number over the four homecoming games to six, and when
they scored, they stopped us from getting the shutout we so desired.
The game ended with a score of 6-1, and your Rochester WIldcats were
the champions.  We had two all-stars, Chris Mitchell and Paul
Gentzke, and one MVP, Tim Artinian.

Score: 6-1
Record 4-2-3

St Mary’s soccer

Falk 2 St Mary’s 0

This past Tuesday our boys varsity team took on the Falk school in
our second soccer match of the season.  Our club was determined to
improve upon some of the errors we exhibited in our previous
contest.  Right from the get-go, it was clear that we were going to
play a more aggressive style of defense in an effort to provide our
offense with more opportunities to score. In the 1st half of the game
our assertive approach was dictating the tempo of the contest and
although we were unable to slip anything by our oppositions goal
keeper, we tallied more shots on goal then we did the entire match
that preceded this one.  Our best chance came at the 14:00min mark
when one of our mid-fielders(Lu Reh) rang a shot of our competitors
cross bar only to have the ball fall straight down to the goal line
and roll a few inches in the wrong direction.  At half time the score
was tied 0-0 and although our team was happy with our effort so far,
we knew there was still a full 25:00min of soccer left to play.
Unfortunately, the 2nd half of the contest didn’t go as we had
planned.  With limited substitutes, our players gradually could no
longer impose the same type of will that they forced upon Falk
earlier in the game.  Despite a stout defense led by Jacob Rhoades
and a number of key saves by Baylen Oliver, Falk eventually was able
to tack on some goals and dashed any hope that we might be able to
squeak out a win.  In our post game meeting the coaching staff as
well as the players talked about how they were able to see some
positive changes in our teams style of play and realize what it is
going to take in order to continue to present a challenge for other
teams.  Once again, we would like to thank all of our supporters and
look forward to seeing you at future games.

Western Pennsylvania soccer and volleyball

VOLLEYBALL, they swept us in 3 sets, 25-6, 25-11, and 25-13.  LEAGUE RECORD:
1-7  SEASON RECORD: 1-11
SOCCER – They opened by knocking 4 goals in the first half and added another
one in the 2nd half.  I decided to put all my substitutes (6 of them) in to
give them some game time experience with 15 minutes left in the game.  We
allowed one goal in but managed to take that one back by putting one behind
the opponent’s net by our substitute, Mark Greathouse.  He has gotten a goal
in 2 consecutive game (He was not on the roster for the Rochester
Homecoming, thereby missing all 4 games there).

LEAGUE RECORD: 2-5-1  OVERALL RECORD: 4-6-3

We will host Ohio School for the Deaf in both sports today.

As for tomorrow, our Lady Lions will travel to Seeds of Faith and our soccer
team will earn a forfeit victory over Cornerstone Prep due to unforeseen
circumstance on their part.  I hate that… getting forfeit victory… ugh!

Against Ohio SD in volleyball and soccer
VOLLEYBALL – We won, 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 17-25, and 25-21).

OVERALL RECORD: 2-11

SOCCER – We found ourselves battling out and at the 15th minute mark, it
seemed that we were just standing and munching on popcorn, watching Dixy
Aplicano doing his show with his foot and weaving through our defense and
ramming it home for a 1-0 lead.  Five minutes later, we were called for a
penalty and that occurred in the penalty box, giving the Spartans an
opportunity to increase their lead if they convert this penalty shot.  They
called on Dixy to do the honors and he cheerfully did his duty with ease,
putting them up 2-0.   After in invigorating pep talk at the half time, we
continued to pressure them and Mark Greathouse (yes, him again!) got us on
the board at the 57th minute mark when he tapped a Travis Frye’s pass in.
At the 66th minute mark, Travis Frye headed an Anthony Cochran’s corner kick
to tie the game up.  Mark Greathouse strike again at the 74th minute mark by
directing Dajion Dixon’s kick into to give us a 3-2 lead.  Kevin Araujo put
an exclamation when he added an insurance goal at the 79th minute mark and
we escaped with a 4-2 victory.
Our game against Cornerstone Prep has been forfeited to us due to unforeseen
issue on their part….

RECORD: 6-6-3

Comments for coach Kevin Voelker ” Our boys played with good effort and enthusiasm in the game. We had a lot of penalties on defense that our team is going to have to improve on when we face Minnesota School for the Deaf. Minnesota is 4-0 in our conference, we our 2-1. But if our boys cut out the penalties, we be ready for Minnesota.”

Next game is Saturday, October 6 at 2:00 p.m.

Phoenix football

It was like chasing a mirage in the desert in last night’s battle of the winless at the huge Cortez High School stadium for Phoenix, as the Roadrunners lost their fifth game of the season to Arizona Charter, 44-36. A 45-yard run into the end zone by PDSD’s Eric Blount with 17 seconds remaining was nullified by a holding penalty against PDSD.

PDSD will host California School for the Deaf at Riverside on Friday, Sept. 28th at 7 pm.

Tennessee vs Louisiana football

At the Louisiana Homecoming Day game (their motivation), TSD left at 1 pm for the “infinite-like” trip (12 hours) and arrived at 1 30 am with no Friday practice! Plus there was 90s degree at 3 PM on Saturday.

Matt Hamill’s comeback win

Deaf light heavyweight Matt Hamill of Utica, N.Y., was successful in his return from a year-long retirement. Hamill (11-4) scored a unanimous decision over Nova Scotia’s Roger Hollett (13-4).

……

DeafSports Trivia

Q. There was an unusual Gallaudet football feat that took place in the 35-7 win over Newport News Apprentice. What was it?

A. A QB brother (Todd Bonheyo) threw a touchdown pass to a running back brother (Ryan Bonheyo). It is believed to be the only time in Gallaudet’s football history that this brother scoring act took place. Way back in 1966, there was a QB, Emory Marsh and a wide receiver, Charles Marsh, both brothers, but there were no touchdown passes between both of them.

it really was a good match for us overall.  The girls were doing much
better with serve receive and played better offense and defense than
we have played so far this season.  This is probably the 3rd best
team weíve played, yet we had our best game, which says a lot for the
girls.  This season is going to be about what we do on our side of
the net, not what the scoreboard reflects.  If we are able to get in
some wins along the way, thatís just going to be an extra bonus!  Our
best opportunity to win will be our two tournaments and non-district
play, since our district schedule is so tough!

The next game is on Thursday, September 20 at Oak Hall in
Gainesville.  JV will play at 5:30 and Varsity at 6:30.  Please come
out and support the girls, if you can!

Iowa volleyball

Game #1

Iowa Deaf vs Lewis Central Frosh (4A school)

Lost in 2 straight in the triangular meet

25-17, 25-8

Rough edges during the game, saw bright spots at serving.  Auna
Ferguson 7-8 serving, Marianne Mohr 4-5 and Johanna Scherling 100% at
the line.

Game #2

Iowa Deaf vs Thomas Jefferson Frosh (3 A school)

Lost a close one to the Yellowjackets in two

Second match of the triangular

25-22 , 25-16

Johanna Scherling  3 kills lead the team.  Cassie Contreras middle
hitter had 2 kills.  Defensively, ISD played good with team total of
22 digs.

Game #3

Iowa Deaf vs  Treynor Frosh  (2A school)

Took Treynor only 3 sets to beat us.  Out of sync all night!

25-20  25-11  25-16

Only got a total of 6 kills all night, and defensively struggled with
our passing.

Played a roller coaster of a game, with close rallies then then ace
serves.

Cassie Contreras and Annette Hough both had 2 blocks.

Game #4

Won our first game of the season against Arkansas School for the
Deaf.

25-18  25-21   25-10

The whole team got to play some.  Which was nice for the players on
the ISD team.

Leading the way that day was Amanda Barrier, Auna Ferguson, Johanna
Scherling at the net.

Played aggressive volleyball!

Johanna Scherling went 100% hitting, with 1 kill and Amanda Barrier
went 100% hitting with 3 kills.

“I was pleased with their effort, but I know we can play better
volleyball”    It was a lot of fun to travel for the first time to
Arkansas.

Game #5

Back home to play Underwood JV and ISD could not muster a win!

25-5   17-25(w)  25-12    25-15

Went 4 sets but could not put things together.  Once again our
passing failed us.    Our top skills for the day was our serving
again.   Outstanding serves we had as a team.

Auna Ferguson lead with 6 aces.   Our setting got alittle better from
Gabby Humlicek and Amanda Barrier.  Still working out the kinks!!

Game #6

Iowa Deaf vs   Heartland Christian

Frustrating loss for us again.   Could not put 2 and 2 together.
Defensively solid, serving solid, our downfall again-passing.!
“things we need to work on all year is our passing.  We need to
become a better team right off the bat”

Scores

25-17   25-16  17-25(w)  25-17

Gabby Humlicek, Amanda Barrier and Johanna Scherling all set well.

We are getting there coach Lechner said.

Game #7

Iowa Deaf Vs  Nishnabotna JV

Wow!  Still cannot get on track with every aspect of our game!

Lost again

26-24   25-21   21-25(w)   25-23

BUT did play some good volleyball.   Kept it close all night.  Good
serving from both teams, outstanding defense both teams—either team
could have won the match.   14 defensive digs, 11 kills, (5 Cassie
Contreras middle hitter) and our passing and setting improved.

Leaders on the team:   Johanna Scherling, Auna Ferguson and sub
player Brianna Vargo saw good action due to the fact Amanda Barrier
went down with an ankle injury.

Game #8

Iowa Deaf vs Kansas Deaf

What a Cat comeback!!!!  Down 2 games to 0, the Lady Bobcats fought
back, clawing and scratching to pull out the win in 5.

Exciting game to watch, coach and the players played with Heart!

Johanna Scherling switched to middle due to the injury to Cassie
Contreras and played outstanding.  Setters Gabby and Amanda stepped
up their game in all aspects.   Serving was our strong suit.

Our record now is 2 wins and 6 loses.

Next game against Boystown and Minnesota Deaf in a Triangular on
Saturday.

St Mary’s volleyball

It is now SMSD Girls VB season and our SMSD girls are working and
practicing well so far.  This year there are more rookies in our
volleyball team than the experience players I have this year.  It is
pretty much a well balance and both rookies and experience players
are player mentoring with positive support and teaching.  I see them
working well like a team.  Our goal in our team is “TEAMWORK” and all
agree with it.

Yesterday was our first Volleyball game and we played against Niagara
Catholic.  We played two best of three and won two games.  The scores
were 25 – 14 (W) and 25- 12 (W).   Niagara Catholic was nice and
willing to play the third game as our practice since we, SMSD, do not
have lot of girls like many other schools.  Thank you Niagara
Catholic and we appreciated.

Emily Murphy, Senior, did a great job on her serving with the total
of 19 points in two games.  And for the rookie, Jamila Torres, 8th
grader, had 12 points with her serving.  The others did a great job
in overall playing areas; bump-set-spike.  Rebecca Swiatek had three
sets and she was so thrill with her playing.

Excellent job, SMSD Girls VB team, on your first start of the
season.  Keep it up and continue to work as a team!

Our next two games are Thursday, Sept. 20th which we will play
against Health Science Charter at 4 pm (home) and the next one is
Saturday at 10 am which we will play with PSD (Pennsylvania School
for the Deaf from Philadelphia) – our SMSD Homecoming weekend.  Come
and watch with our team.  We need your support!

TUES SEPT 18    lost to WILSON CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 1-3 (24-26, 21-25, 25-18,
and 15-25)
SEASON RECORD and LEAGUE RECORD: 1-5-0

SOCCER

MON SEPT 17 – hosted American Spirit and it only took us 11 seconds to grab
the lead, 1-0 on a Shay Reeves’ goal, assisted by Kevin Araujo.  It took
American Spirit 9 times longer to neutralize that goal (1 minute and 30
seconds later).  For the next 38 minutes of that first half, we both could
not do anything but clanged off the goal posts (us 4 times to their 1 time).
At the 43rd minute mark of the 2nd half, we took the lead once again on a
deadly Reeves brother passing combination, Seth tapping in on a Shay’s pass.
They got even at the 62nd minute mark and then immediately took the lead at
the 67th minute mark.  The time is running out but we refused to wave the
white flag and kept on battling back and finally the ball found the back of
the net on a Travis Frye’s scorching kick with only 24 seconds remaining!
We went into overtime and ended up in a 3-3 tie.

TUES SEPT 18th – hosted Wilson Christian Academy  – We wanted to play as
hard as we did the other day!   We did… the first half remained scoreless
and the most important thing is that we managed to shut their best player
down!  The 2nd half began on an ominous note as we allowed a goal on an
untimely mistake by our defender.  They got another one in on a lucky bounce
when our goalie who had fielded a nice save tried to throw the ball but it
squirmed away (yes, it was raining that time) and that best player took
advantage of it and tipped it home for a 2-0 lead.  They added an insurance
goal at the 74th minute mark.  We managed to avert a shut out when Travis
Frye knocked a goal in at the very last minute (with about 15 seconds left
in the game).

LEAGUE RECORD; 1-4-1  OVERALL RECORD: 2-4-1

Wisconsin volleyball

We came into Minnesota knowing that we would be in for a fight. We
lost the first two games. Third game the girls broke out fighting
back hard and ended up winning forcing a 4th game to be played. The
girls were not finished fighting. The 4th game was a battle but we
refused to give up. We ended up making that game a very close one
losing only by 3 points! All players played today and proved to be
true fighters! So proud of them!!!!  The scores were 13-25, 10-25,
25-17, and 22-25.  Although we did have our first loss, our
statistics were great!  Our serving errors dropped to 13% team
serving error.  Our team was on fire with their hitting skills.  Lexi
Christ had 3 kills; Anna Dorst had 3 kills as well.  Elizabeth Besaw
had two hitting kills while Lyssa Matsche, Marika Beyer, and Kori
Koss each had one hitting kill.

Dedication

DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to Bonita
Hara, the past superintendent of Louisiana School for
the Deaf who just passed away.

Almost immediately upon becoming the new school
superintendent two years ago, she had football
restarted at the LSD. This school, with a strong
tradition in football, was without this sport
for several years.

Said football coach Darren Gremillion:

She was very supportive of athletics at LSD.
I’m going to truly miss her

we will play against #3 University (SF) this saturday at 7pm.

(editor’s note: team is playing without key player Jacy Pedersen,
who is out for the season with an injury)

from Kevin Kovacs, athletic director:

If we win on Saturday we will be in the semifinals for the NCS Division V.
All semifinalists will then qualify for the Nor Cal regardless of what
happens after the sectionals.  Then whoever wins the Nor Cal will play
in the State Finals. Nor Cal includes the top 4 finishers of the other
sections in Northern California. This is only for Division I through V.
There is no Nor Cal or State Finals for Division VI. In some years,
we are in Division VI and others we are in V depending on our enrollment in High School.

This year we are in Division V. Division V is way much tougher than Division VI.
Very hard for us to win with Division V schools in the playoffs. Most of the
schools are private with enrollment up to 400 whereas our school barely has
200 students. Division V is always TOUGH!!

one of the 10 fighters that MMA will miss is Matt Hamill.

the web posting said:

When Matt Hamill came onto season four of The Ultimate Fighter, he became
an instant hit with the fans due to being deaf. Hamill used his TUF  fame
to create a very successful career that saw the former Olympic gold
medalist defeat such names as Tito Ortiz and Mark Munoz.

Hamill’s career is proof that anyone can achieve their dreams. Despite
having a disability, Hamill showed that a disability wasn’t a disadvantage
(contrary to Ortiz’s medical claims).

“The Hammer” had an exciting style that featured strong takedowns and
powerful strikes. This combination made him into one of the most popular
UFC fighters to never win a title.

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. The annual Dummy Hoy baseball (not softball) tournament
is where we see the deaf baseball at its finest?

A. DeafDigest Sports is not too sure if we are seeing deaf
baseball at its finest because of two reasons – these
abbreviated five inning games and because of its confusing
pitch-count rules. A smart baseball coach would “hide”
its best pitcher for the championship game by avoiding these
pitch count rules in the preliminary round games. One
school did – and won the championship! During the regular
season the coaches rotate its staff of starting pitchers,
not always that so during the hurried Dummy Hoy weekend.

The 73-point losing margin broke a school record.  The old record was
69 points, when McKinney beat KSD 108-39 in 1972.

KSD also broke a modern school record for fewest points in a game.
The previous record was set two months ago, when KSD scored 11 points
against California School for the Deaf-Riverside.

The eight points were the fewest in school history since KSD scored 7
points against Illinois School for the Deaf (an 18-7 loss) in 1931.

KSD’s season ends with a record of 11-20.  The 31 games are the most
in a season in school history.  The 1996-97 team played 30 games.

An individual school record has been broken as well with Michael
Miller, Adam Turner, and Dillon Maynard playing in 31 games each.

MSD finally had first game since Feb 12 because of mid winter break. The
players did not have any practices and it’s their first day to play a game
after they got back from mid winter break. Our players got rusted in first
half plus we played without our two key players due to injuries. Mohammand
Algohaim made 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Christian Garita made 8
points and had 5 steals. Our record is 4-15. Our last game will be on this
Thursday against Auburn Hills Christian Academy.

NJSD Girls End Season at ESDAA Tournament
Hosted by New York ~V Fanwood
Division 1

Friday
NJSD 2  5  9  6  = 22
PSD  6  14  12  10  = 42
The Lady Colts played PSD again. This was the second time in three days
and the end result was the same. NJSD got beat by a much better team.
Algerbra Williams led the Lady Colts with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block
and 6 steals. Indra Oseagulu had 6 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 5
steals. Liliana Martinez had 3 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Elvira Kabanova and Rebecca Adeyinka each added 2 points. Rebecca also
pulled down 4 rebounds and had 3 steals.

Saturday
NJSD  6  8  5  7  5  = 31
Lexington  6  8  8  4  2  = 28
Wow what a game. The Lady Colts won it in overtime. The game was tied at
halftime, Lexington took the lead in the third quarter, then NJ tied it up
at the end of the fourth quarter. The Lady Colts came out in a full court
aggressive press in the overtime period and only allowed Lexington 2
points to their 5 points.  A great win. Algerbra Williams led NJSD with a
triple double.! She had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Indra
Oseagulu had 9 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 9 steals. Nicole
Baldwin had 3 points 2 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Rebecca Adeyinka
added 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals.

Sunday
NJSD  21
NYSD-Fanwood  43
The Lady Colts lost  to Fanwood in the Consolation game. Earlier in the
season NJSD lost a 2 point game to Fanwood but in the tournament Fanwood
added a new player and she was outstanding. She beat the Lady Colts almost
by herself. In the second quarter Judith Cantril went down with a rib
injury while trying to draw an offensive foul. She had to be taken to the
hospital by ambulance. Thankfully she only had a deep rib bruise. The
tournament was very well run and fun. Thank you to all the Fanwood staff
and volunteers for a wonderful tournament and all the help they gave us at
the hospital. Thank you to PSD assistant coach Susan Spiegel for acting as
interpreter at the hospital. We have not received the final stats or a
copy of the scorebook yet from NYSD so there are no individual numbers for
the final game. Thank you again Matthew Eby, Athletic Director at NYSD,
and all the NYSD staff.

Algerbra Williams was named to the All Tournament Team. Algerbra also won
Athlete of the Month at NJSD this month.

In the last quarter, we were down 16 points.  Game over,
right?  Nope.   In less than 3 mintues, sophomore
Kimberly Herrera  made three 3-point shots in a row and
freshmen Amberley Luna added her own 3 pointer to that
run.  We had the ball in the last few seconds, but we did
not manage to make the last shot we needed in order to
win.  I m very proud of my girls who did not give up.
Rosina Garcia was unable to play due to illness and her
      absence was felt tonight.

resulted in our losing our lead at several times.
With 26 points, 4 assists, and 12 rebounds, Andrick
Carroll carried the team through this game. Ever
chipped in 16 points with 4 three-pointers,
not only that, he pulled down 11 rebounds as well.
Our lone senior, Michael Jendusa cannot go
unmentioned, he put 11 on the board, assisted 3
baskets and owned the paint with 17 rebounds.

Pennsylania girls

In our first game, the Lady Panthers faced a team that
they are very familiar with in NJSD. The PSD girls got out to a quick
start and never looked back. The final score was 42 to 22 in
favored of the Lady Panthers. Senior Jessica Ginyard had a huge game
and led all scorers with 26 points and was also the game’s leading
rebounder with 21!!!! Morgan Bowens ( Sr.) was busy on the boards as
she came down with 10 rebounds and collected 4 points. Freshman
Brianna Bruce put in a pair of 3 pointers and gathered 3 steals.
Senior Francine Tyson and Freshman Kim Nguyen got on the scoreboard
as well with 2 and 4 points respectively.
The second game versus MSD was not much of a match as
our Lady Panthers lost to the mighty Lady Orioles by the score of 61
to 19. The MSD girls are a well coached team and have some very good
players. However, the PSD girls never gave up and fought to the final
whistle. One bright spot that happened in this contest was that
Brianna notched in three 3 pointers. Jessica was the team leading
scorer with 10 points.

The third and final game was for bronze medal versus
ASD. In the first quarter both teams were playing tough defense. When
the  first quarter ended, the score was only 11 to 7 in favored of
the Lady Tigers. Then the storm came as our key player Jessica
Ginyard was called for her 3rd foul and had to sit on the bench with
5 minutes remaining before halftime. ASD girls quickly took advantage
of this opportunity as they expanded their lead to 16 points by
intermission. This deficit seem to shaken our players’ confidence
during the entire 2nd half as ASD continued to build on their lead
and prevailed by the score of 55 to 28. We just simply lost to a
strong and better team. Jessica was out leading scorer with 16 points
and also led the team with 7 rebounds. Francine chipped in with 3
baskets. Kim and Brianna added to score by contributing with 4 and 2
points respectively. Although, we did not take home 3rd place in this
year’s tournament, the girls were still happy with a 4th place
finish.

This concludes our 2011-12 basketball season as we ended
up with a record of 9 wins and 15 losses. Despite the various
adversities our team faced this year we were able to have a decent
season. The highlight of the season was when the PSD girls took 2nd
place at the CSSD Tournament and as mention above capturing 4th place
at the ESSDA Tournament. Futhermore, Jessica was able to surpass the
1,000 point mark ( 1,162 ) for her career along with collecting a
total of 674 rebounds. She became only the second female in PSD’S
basketball history to go over the 1,000 point mark ( Sara Wummer is
tops with 2,060 pts.) and I’m sure she’s among the top 3 female
rebounders of all time at PSD.

We the coaches would like to thank our Lady Panthers for
always displaying determination and the never quit attitude no matter
what challenges and obstacles came their way. The coaches are very
proud of ALL OF YOU and we are already looking forward to the 2012-13
basketball season!

good and led at halftime, 38-21.  We won the game and the final score

Sunday, February 19

We played against Delaware who was in 1st seed.  I had some concerns
as Delaware is a good team and my goal was for my boys to be more
aggressive on defense.  At halftime we were leading 35-28.  The last
8 minutes we out scored them 19-8 and won the championship 68-53.  I
was very proud of my boys who played a remarkable game.

the opponent s inside paint area in the second half
however UGC clicked the outside shooting area well.
We made a progress into the right direction from the 4th

as much as possible. We will play our last game on

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. What was so ironical about Fremont boys soon to play
a sectional playoff game against Hoopa Valley on their
home court?

(wrong answer)
A. The Fremont football team played against Hoopa Valley
in the sectionals in the first round last fall and lost
by one point. And now, this same school again in
Hoopa Valley, ugh! Six hours bus ride from Fremont.

(correct answer)
Fremont won the first round football playoff game to
advance to the second round when they lost to Hoopa Valley
by one point.

THREE-PEAT!!!

The 2012 Lady Bison’s have once again captured the Division II
Eastern School for the Deaf championship. This is the 3rd consecutive
ESDAA championship for the our team.

The Lady Bison’s travelled to Delaware for the tournament this year
with high expectations.  We earned a “bye” in the 1st round based on
our previous ESDAA history and the fact that we were returning to the
tournament with the same squad that had won the previous 2 years.
The 2nd round of the tournament was a repeat of last year’s semi
finals against Rhode Island School for the Deaf.  We knew that RISD
was going to primarily focused on Crystle Marion (Deaf All-American,
ESDAA Tournament MVP, Deaf Player of the Year(2010), and recently
Western NY all time leading scorer)), however our game plan was to
spread the ball and show that all of our players were up to the task
of advancing into the finals.  Our strategy could not have worked
better and by halftime we had Rhode Island on the ropes.  Throughout
the entire 2nd half our opponents looked confused and frustrated.
The Lady Bison’s were firing on all cylinders and each player was
able to make a contribution on the scoreboard (Marion/19pts.,
Ward-Brassell/16pts., Flowers & Quinones/6pts., Abdulkadir, Hawkins,
& Lewis/4pts.)The contest ended in 59-17 victory that propelled St.
Mary’s into the finals for the third year in a row.  The championship
game would showcase a Western New York  rivalry and  a re-match of
the 2011 ESDAA finals between the #1 and #2 seeds,  Rochester School
for the Deaf vs St. Mary’s School for the Deaf.

The Lady Bison’s and the Wildcats from RSD were no
strangers.  We had already played against one another earlier this
season in a closely contested game in which St. Mary’s won by 9
points, not to mention how often we have faced off against each other
over the past 4 years at the ESDAA tournament.  They knew our
tendencies as well as we knew theirs and there wasn’t going to be any
surprises.  The team that controlled their emotions, didn’t panic in
pressure situations, and limited their mistakes would be successful.
The Lady Bison’s were prepared for a very close game.  We knew that
beating the same team twice in a season was going to be difficult and
trying to win 3 consecutive championships was going to be even
harder, especially against a team like Rochester.  We tried not self
inflict ourselves with any additional pressure but it weighed on our
minds that we were graduating 3 seniors and that this would be their
last shot at a title.  We also knew that it had been 25 years since
any girls team had accomplished a THREE-PEAT and we wanted to make
our mark on St. Mary’s athletic history.  The actual game played out
as expected.  There were 4 lead changes and each team took turns
exploiting the others teams weaknesses.  Heading into the 4th
quarter, Rochester had a 5 point lead but ran into some foul
trouble.  The Lady Bison’s remained patient and within striking
distance all day and now it was time to step-up. We evened the score
with 3:00 remaining and then proceeded to go on a 9-3 run.  With 1:00
remaining we did our best to “milk” the clock and capture the prize
that we had set our sights on back in November.   Once again it was a
team victory with points being spread out amongst all of the
starters. (Marion/25pts., Ward-Brassell/8pts., Flowers/4pts.,
Quinones/2pts.).  Crystle Marion and Sarah Flowers were awarded 1st
team all-stars and Rebecca Swaitek was awarded the Ann Leo trophy for
courage and dedication.

Once again this was our 3rd straight ESDAA championship in as many
years and we could not have done it without the entire schools
support.    On behalf of the coaching staff and players we would like
to thank all of the administrators, supervisors, teachers,
counselors,  residential staff, nurses, security, transportation,
cafeteria staff, and parents for your support and cooperation in
helping us be so successful.  However, our season is not finished.
We still have one more regular season game and the IAC playoffs.
Hopefully there is still some magic left in this special season.

Deaf Sports Trivia

Q. Yesterday’s DeafDigest Sports Trivia mentioned
Kevin Milligan. If he was so great a high school player
why wasn’t he offered basketball scholarships?

A. He may possibly have, but in these days, the administration
at St Mary’s School for the Deaf may have screened out
queries by college basketball coaches, leaving Kevin out
in the dark. But once he got out from St Mary’s, local
college coaches have asked him to play for them. He, however,
went to Gallaudet.

Jackson Heights, N.Y.- Martin Luthter’s B team showed up with only
FIVE girls as their four other girls could not come for vary of
reasons. They had great shooters on the team as they made most of
their shots on the outside perimeter area. Seems like they made 80%
of their shots as Alexis McLeod stopped them cold in the paint so
forced the girls to shoot from the outside of paint area as they made
all kinds of shots such as banking off the backboard, swishing shots
“nothing but net”, and jump shots were made as well. However, we
played without our star, Jessica De la Cruz as she was absent because
she was so sick.

SCSDB Makes SC Proud at the Mason Dixon Tournaments

If you see a few tired staff and students today, that is because they
gave everything they had to play hard, cheer hard, coach hard and
support the teams at the Boys and Girls Mason Dixon Tournaments.

Boy’s Tournament and Cheer Competition Georgia School for the Deaf

The boys plays extremely well and lost two heartbreakers. This VERY
young team has taken great strides to learn all they can in such a
short time. We only have one experienced varsity player from the past
and this team has stepped up to the line to play as hard as they can.
The boys lost 67-62 to ENCSD on Friday and 30-28 to Kentucky on
Saturday. They play with tremendous heart in each game. I am proud to
announce the Fernandez Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team.
He scored a combined 45 points in the two games. Rhadel Grate also
scored 24 points for the Hornets, followed by DreQuan Cheeks with 8,
Christopher McLeod with 7, and Montravious James, Derrick Good and
Johnny Buccieri added 2 each.

The team is coaches by Russ Gribble and Joe Johnson. Thanks also to
Jerald Crowley for his assistance on the trip.

The cheer team showed awesome improvement and faced teams with great
experience. Even though we did not place in the top three, they
looked great. The cheer team is coached by Wendy Lufkin and Sophia
Smith. Volunteer Coach Kayla Duran was also there to assist the
girls.

Girl’s Tournament at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind

Our girls may not have won first place, but they won the respect both
on and off the court. The team did finish 5th place in the
tournament. Kia Smith and Destiny McCarter were named to the
All-Tournament team and Kia Smith won the 3 point shooting contest.
The girls had to play 5 games in three days, so I know they are VERY
tired. The team results were, SCSDB defeated North Carolina 36 – 10,
SCSDB lost to eventual champion Alabama 58 – 41, SCSDB defeated
Kentucky 39 – 18, SCSDB defeated Louisiana 55 – 21 and SCSDB defeated
Virginia in a very hot contest 48 – 46.

The girls team is Coached By Jessica Creech and Joe Whitner. They
were assisted by Ann Riddle.

We also cannot say enough about our wonderful bus driver Steve Hill.
He is such a tremendous asset to our school, transportation
department and especially our athletics programs.

Please congratulate these players, coaches and staff on a wonderful
trip.

The teams finish the season this week. They play away tomorrow night,
but finish up the season Thursday night at home against NCSD. Please
come out and show your support. The girls start at 6pm and the boys
play at 7:30pm.
